Mike Johnson was very happy two of his Lincoln East teammates
joined him for the photo shoot for the All-Nebraska boys soccer team.
"There were some great players. I didn't even know who was
going to be here, there were so many to pick from," said Johnson, the
honorary captain of the newspaper's 18th annual honor team.
Senior defender Don Freeman, like Johnson a two-time All-Nebraska
selection, and senior midfielder Pat Dingledine played on the Spartans' state
championship team that defeated Omaha Creighton Prep 2-1 in the finals.
"Don held together our defense," Johnson said.
"I've been playing with Don forever, and he's someone you can count on to guard
if they have a great forward. He's just a great overall defender.
Dingledine had 10 goals and 10 assists in support of Johnson, who
had a team-high 13 goals and eight assists.
"Without Pat, I wouldn't have had the career I had at
East," Johnson said. "He set me up for a lot of goals. Especially
that one in the state final. That was pretty memorable."
Omaha Burke also put three players on the All-Nebraska first team
- seniors Matt Swartz and Adam Hooi and junior Alex Henery. Prep had two, Byron
Dacy and Mike Stillmock.
Chris Krueger of Millard North, John Bradford of Lincoln Southeast
and Ben Theimer of Millard South complete the first team.
The first-team forwards are Dacy, Stillmock, Johnson and Henery.
Swartz, Theimer, Dingledine and Krueger are the midfielders, Hooi and Freeman
the defenders and Bradford the goalkeeper.
Nominations of high school coaches and observations of
World-Herald sportswriters determine the newspaper's honor teams.
Three of the 11 are heading for Creighton, Dacy, Stillmock and
Swartz. Dacy and Stillmock combined for 34 goals for the Junior Jays. Swartz
had eight goals and 18 assists, one short of the Class A record of 19.
Krueger had 13 goals and 12 assists for the Mustangs, who reached
the state semifinals for the second time in three years.
Henery is the only junior on the first team. Bradford led Class A
goalkeepers with a 0.46 goals-allowed average.
Johnson, the state's Gatorade player of the year based on 2004
performance, was able to maintain that level of excellence.
"I played as well as I expected to," he said. "The
statistics weren't off the charts, but my personal performance and how much I
helped the team was pretty significant."
