Statements of Teaching PhilosophyMy philosophy of education is to foster the self-confidence of the learner in a manner in which their dignity and worth as human beings is recognized. I believe that students who are empowered to share in the decision-making process of what they learn, and what they will do to demonstrate mastery of an outcome will become more effective learners. I believe that the development of critical thought is paramount to the success of the learner. In my classroom you will find a "high degree" of ownership in the writing process, as well as the discussion of literature. I believe that when you (the teacher) improve student learning, you build a sense of "community" among the learners. I want students to know that they can respond openly and honestly to works of literature, and feel free to express their beliefs without fear of ridicule or discrimination.
Overall, as an educator I believe my role is to prepare students to critically interpret their role in society, and to prepare them for participation in the world.
