East boys 2, Southeast 0

 

David Olson scored both goals as the Spartans staked claim to the No. 1 ranking.

 

Second-rankedEast, 10-0, is the state's only remaining unbeaten boys team, following No. 1 Millard West's weekend loss to Ames, Iowa. The Spartans are ranked No. 12 in the nation, according to Student Sports magazine.

 

Olson broke a scoreless tie in the 48th minute, scoring on an assist from Justin Lightner. Olson's insurance goal came in the 76th minute, with Jon Sims assisting.

 

"Southeast is a well-coached and talented team, but we just played very well tonight," East Coach Jeff Hoham said. "For us to play as well as we did tonight, I think that's a reflection of how hard our kids are working this season."

 

No. 8 Southeast, 7-4, managed only one shot against the wind in the first half, as East outshot the Knights 30-8 for the game.

 

Joel Bergt recorded his eighth shutout for East, which faces Kearney and North Platte this weekend in North Platte.

 

"We're going to need some rest,"Hoham said.
